in Lahore, rising utility bills, increasing petrol costs, and higher expenses on food have left many families struggling to manage their budgets, pushing travel plans down their list of priorities. The uncertain political situation in recent months and the deteriorating state of the country's finances have resulted in a significant decline in the number of tourists visiting popular destinations, both within and outside the city. Inflation has eroded the purchasing power of citizens, making it difficult for them to allocate extra funds for leisure activities.
Rao Abdul Rehman, an avid traveler from Model Town, used to plan trips to various parts of the country with his friends. However, this year, he had to cancel his plans due to the rising cost of travel. He mentioned that a one-week trip that used to cost them around Rs 300,000 now costs at least Rs 400,000.
Like Rehman, many other travel enthusiasts are also giving up on their vacation plans because they need to prioritize household expenses, including hefty electricity bills. The Travel Agents Association of Pakistan reports that economic instability has driven away a significant portion of regular travelers from the tourism sector, leading to the closure of around 50 percent of small tourist agencies.
Chaudhary Anis Iqbal, the leader of the association, pointed out that the tourism sector had already been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and now the country's financial challenges have further destabilized it. He also noted that the ongoing political conflict has deterred both local and foreign tourists from visiting heritage sites in the city.
Data from the Walled City of Lahore Authority confirms a 50 percent decrease in the number of tourists visiting popular historical sites like the Lahore Fort and Lahore Museum. Meanwhile, the Punjab Tourism Department claims to be taking steps to promote tourism in the province, but sources within the department reveal that funding for new tourist initiatives has not been released yet.
Tehmina Ahmed, spokesperson for the Punjab Tourism Department, mentioned efforts to promote tourism in South Punjab during the upcoming winter season, including the construction of Dharabi Lake Resorts, Dadukhel, and Changa Manga Aqua Parks, which are expected to be open to the public soon.
