Temporary Indian Visa Suspension for Canadians Won’t Affect Existing Visa Holders

The Indian government has introduced changes to its visa issuance in response to escalating tensions with Canada. This move follows Canada's accusations regarding India's alleged involvement in the assassination of Sikh activists and naturalized Canadian citizens. In reaction to these allegations, India issued a travel warning to its citizens in Canada, while Canada withdrew some staff from its Indian consulates due to security concerns.

As a result of this diplomatic dispute, Indian authorities have implemented visa changes that impact Canadian nationals in India. BLS International, a service provider for diplomatic missions worldwide, announced that Canadians in India can apply for visa renewals in accordance with their visa categories, despite the ongoing tensions. However, delays in visa processing are expected due to the strained relations between the two countries. Earlier, BLS International had suspended visa services temporarily, citing operational reasons. The company sent a letter to Indian stock exchanges stating that Indian visa services in Canada had been suspended until further notice, effective September 21, 2023. The deterioration of Canada-India relations began when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations that the Indian government was involved in the assassination of a Sikh independence activist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, on Canadian soil. Indian authorities strongly denied these allegations, describing them as politically motivated. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that security threats against the Indian High Commission and consulates in Canada were a key factor in the temporary suspension of visa issuance across all categories. The decision was made due to concerns about incitement of violence, inaction by Canadian authorities, and the creation of a hostile environment that disrupted the functioning of India's diplomatic missions in Canada.
