EU Parliament’s President Calls for Urgent Action on Ukraine’s EU Accession
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has emphasized that the December European Council meeting should focus on enlargement, urging the European Union to initiate accession negotiations with Ukraine in the same month. Metsola stressed the importance of readiness for the EU system, designed for 27 countries, to accommodate 32, 33, or even 35 countries. She highlighted that the pre-accession phase should not be underestimated and called for the start of open negotiations with Ukraine by the end of the year. Metsola asserted that no one in the European Parliament should tell a country like Ukraine, suffering from bombings, to wait for a more convenient time. She believes that providing answers to all countries taking steps towards EU membership enhances the Union's security.
Metsola has consistently shown her support for Ukraine. In March of this year, she made an unannounced visit to Lviv, discussing Ukraine's EU aspirations with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and expressing hope for accession negotiations to commence in the same year. In June, she called for serious negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership bid, aiming for Ukraine to become part of the EU by the end of the year. Metsola emphasized the need to honor promises regarding the opening of negotiations, acknowledging Ukraine's remarkable reform efforts, even during times of war.
On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, prompting President Zelenskyy to request immediate admission to the EU through a new special procedure on February 28, 2022. In June 2022, Ukraine, along with Moldova, attained EU candidate status. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal expressed hope that his country would become a full EU member within the next two years. Russia's invasion led to a significant number of Ukrainians seeking refuge in other EU countries, with approximately 4.07 million Ukrainians receiving temporary protection in EU nations as of June 30, 2023, with Germany hosting the largest share of refugees under temporary protection.
